Media theory research

In this post I will be looking at a range of media theories that can be applied to magazines. This will mean I can have an initial decision for which media theory I will likely use in the production of my magazine and website.

bell hooks theory can be applied as it is a women as the main image. This shows her to be of importance and the theory showed feminism to be a movement to end patriarchy. Having a women as the main image shows her to be of the same power as a man. Barthes semiology theory can also be applied through the main cover line. The signifier being the word "rebel" the denotation of this is that someone is doing something bad and what they are not meant to. whereas in this the word before is 'royal' , this suggests that princess Kate is going against the normal views of the royals and even though this may be a normal thing to do in the yes of the royals it is bad.
Halls theory can be applied to this front cover , this is because it shows that defining stereotypes creates a representation. The way anti-stereotypes are shown in this front cover is by having Borris Johnson cowering in a corner this shows an anti-stereotype as white men are meant to be seen as having a significant amount of power and cowering in a corner shows a sign of weakness.

The media theories I will be using are Barthes semiology theory. This theory is the study of signs I will use this through images to represent the way cornovirus is shown and the way mental health are shown through the media industry. I will also be using the gender performativity theory to show the anti- sterotype of men as mental health within men is not talked about enough.

ONLINE CROSS MEDIA PRODUCT - WEBSITE

https://spalmer607.wixsite.com/mysite Due to the pandemic I was not able to get audio for my website. Therefore I have made a script of what would have been my interview on my website. This would be the interview: Interviewer: How was your school life when you were younger? Did you feel you faced more challenges than other children? Christian:  I have mixed feelings about school. Half of me wants to say it was great I had my friends and I did achieve well. However it wasn't perfect, bullies exist in all schools and mine would always be to do with race. I would be the last to get picked for a team along with some of my class as they didn't want a team with us. We did get left out so I guess we did face more challenges but not by the teachers by the other students. Interviewer:  Would you say it has become less of an issue since you have got older? Would you say there is more equality? Christian :  Obviously historically there is more equality, but people have ...

Statement of intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? I will be making a current affairs magazine called “New society” by Dennis publishing. I chose the name New society as it relates to the genre of the magazine current affairs as it will discuss topics that are relevant to the new society. This means topics that people aged 16-25 see as relevant and an important current affair. For the first issue of my magazine I will be having a woman wearing a coronavirus mask. This will be a close up of her face to show how everyone can connect with her as the whole world is going through the same pandemic and feeling the fear of the virus. The second issue will be on a male who is suffering depression. This will also be a close up of half his face to show the raw emotion he is going through. The other half is not showing as he is trying to hide his emotions, this is to show how the media usually hid...
