In this post I am going to be looking at media language and representations in two current affairs magazines and looking at how they use media language and how they use media language to show representations to the intended audience. This research is important as it will show me how I can use media language in my magazine and how the media language may help me to show representations as well. I will be looking at the layout, typography , the use of language and the use of images. I will also be looking at media language on websites to help me when making my website for my magazine.
Media language is used in multiple ways throughout this magazine front cover . The colour purple suggests wealth and powerfulness , therefore the lighting bolts coming through the purple sky show the shattering future for Britain's wealth and economy due to the Politian’s. This is also shown in the cartoon image of the Politian’s jumping out of the airplane suggesting that they need to protect themselves and not the British public. The rhetorical question “is May’s Brexit doomed?” shows the uncertainty of success that they public have. The serif typography shows the seriousness of the topic in contrast with the magazine mocking the politicians. The clean layout shows how they know what they want to talk about and the main story of the magazine.

Media language is used throughout this front cover. The main image is a drawn image and could represent peoples feelings towards the lockdown and coronavirus. This is because of the saying draw what you feel and this image is drawn. The pale dusty colours represent the dullness of life during this unexpected time. The layout is the same throughout all magazines from ‘the critic’ , this shows familiarity to the consumer and will bring them comfort to reading it ,especially as it is a topic people are scared of as it is very new. The use of language 'social death' could represent that the world are causing the deaths of many people and they could be mocking it by calling it social death. This makes it sound like a social event people are talking about. It is also shown to be mocked when it says 'lockdown lunacy' the word lunacy represents a lunatic state and next to the word lockdown means they are representing how the world has responded in an irrational way to the virus.
The critic website has a clean layout with not a lot of colour. This is because it needs to be straight to the point about the main story. It has easy navigation as well as all other pages are in a bar at the top which is easily located.
This research has helped me in deciding how I will use media language to make representations in my magazine. I will use images and the colours of blue , grey , black and white. These colours will help show the seriousness of the topics and the blue will help it stand out to make it noticeable.
